The 911 short film was born out of the frustrations of watching Black men and women die as a result of police brutality. With the growing accessibility to social media over the past decade, hurtful occurrences of Black people being harmed by the police force have become more public. And with social media also came polarizing opinions. Comments like "they should have complied with the police officer" or "they should call 911 if they don't feel safe" have been shared by people who do not understand the complexity of the relationship (or lack thereof) between the Black community and the police force. When there are instances where Black people do try to follow the rules, such as a young man willingly advising a police officer of having a firearm in his possession, and still not being able to make it out of that encounter alive, it means that the solution goes beyond Black people "behaving properly".

With all these thoughts in mind and through this film, I wanted to expose viewers to the weight Black communities endure. I also wanted to provide the opportunity for viewers to be clued in on how complex a routine traffic stop could be for certain citizens of color. Ultimately, I do hope that it encourages dialogue, and most importantly spurs further conversations around the proper training that needs to be established by the police force to curb these deadly incidents so that all communities can experience peace.
